YA Book Review and Giveaway

In February Multnomah Books released a two-novella collection combing stories from Robin Jones Gunn’s two most popular young adult series. Departures pairs  two novellas from Gunn’s popular Christy Miller and Sierra Jensen series into one light-hearted book. I highly recommend this retooled combo for teen girls looking for a fun book to read. The  stories of Christy Miller and Sierra Jensen are easy to read, and short enough for a  weekend car trip.

Now Boarding at Gate 10 follows Christy Miller on a family vacation to her grandparents’ farm in Wisconsin. She’s a free woman after a recent split from her longtime boyfriend, Todd. In her old hometown, Christy reunites with a boy she had a crush on in middle school. He takes her down memory lane and rekindles their friendship. Teen girls can certainly relate to Christy’s thoughts and fears in an uncertain time in her life.

In the Even of a Water Landing is the story of Sierra Jensen’s summer trip to her best friend’s lakehouse. Both girls are young teens and Sierra finds that her best friend is growing up faster than she is. Would she really let a boy come between them? It’s fun to watch Sierra become aware of boys and of herself as a young woman. Girls–we’ve all been there! Sierra’s faith and values help her navigate some tricky situations, which makes the story all the more endearing.

These two stories are great for teens because they address real-life issues in an honest and straightforward manner. Parents will have no objections to the great values that these girls display either. So with this book, everyone can be happy. As a twenty-something I found it nostalgic to read and fondly remember my own teen experiences. Departures is a simple and sweet read sure to lift the hearts of teens, twenty-somethings, and parents alike.

Since I received this book from Multnomah free to review, I’ll be giving away my copy. If you would like to be entered to win this book, just leave a comment on my  blog by Sunday August 21, 2011 at 11:59 pm CDT. 1. Hi, Barbara, I saw your message on the ACFW YA loop. 🙂 I read the first 3 Christy books a few years ago and passed them along to some girls in my Sunday school class. They loved them and I’m sure my current group of girls would like the chance to meet Christy and Sierra, too (after I read and review on my blog, too, of course!).
